Service / Engineering
Custom software for the process your spreadsheet has outgrown.
We build internal tools, client portals and web applications shaped around your real workflow — scoped tightly, built in reviewable stages, and handed over with the code and documentation in your name.
01 / What this is
The right first question is whether to build at all
Custom software is the most expensive option on this list to build and to maintain. So the first thing we do is try to talk you out of it: if an existing product covers eighty percent of the need, configuring that product is almost always the better decision.
It stops being true when your process is genuinely your competitive advantage, when off-the-shelf tools force a workflow that costs you real money, or when you are paying per-seat for five tools to approximate one thing. Then building is correct — and the discipline is building the smallest version that works.
We scope to a narrow first release deliberately. A tool doing one job well, in use within weeks, teaches you more about what you actually need than six months of specification ever will.
Good signs this service fits
- A critical process runs on a spreadsheet several people edit
- You pay for multiple tools to approximate one workflow
- Off-the-shelf software forces steps that cost you money
- Clients ask for visibility you cannot currently give them
- Your process is genuinely a competitive advantage
02 / Problems it solves
What Custom Software Development usually fixes
Software that matches your actual process
Built around how the work is really done, instead of bending the team around a product's assumptions.
Critical data out of a shared spreadsheet
Proper validation, permissions and an audit trail, so one wrong paste stops being a business incident.
Growth without proportional admin
Volume rises without needing more people to keep the spreadsheet accurate.
03 / Deliverables
What you actually receive
We favour mainstream, well-documented technology over whatever is newest, specifically so you can hire someone else to maintain it. Novel stacks are a liability for a small business.
Scope discipline is the main thing we bring. Every proposal names what is in the first release and what is explicitly deferred.
Included in a standard engagement
- A written specification: user roles, core flows, data model, out-of-scope list
- Working application deployed to a staging environment you can use
- User authentication and permissions appropriate to the roles
- Data validation and error handling on every input path
- Source code in a repository you own, with readable commit history
- Technical documentation plus a user guide
- Deployment to production with backup and monitoring configured
- An agreed warranty period for defects after launch
04 / How it works
From first call to finished work
The ASOLZ six-phase process, applied to this service. Each stage ends with something you can review.
- STEP 01
Build-or-buy review
We look for an existing product that fits. If one does, we say so — that is a short, cheap engagement and the right outcome.
- STEP 02
Scope the first release
The smallest version that delivers real value, with everything else written down as a later phase.
- STEP 03
Design data and flows
Data model, user roles and screen flows agreed before code, because changing these later is what makes projects expensive.
- STEP 04
Build in stages
Development in reviewable increments on a staging link, so you course-correct early rather than at the end.
- STEP 05
Launch and warranty
Production deployment, backups, monitoring, handover, and a defect warranty period.
05 / Use cases
Typical Custom Software Development projects
Job and workflow tracking
Jobs through stages with assignment, status, deadlines and a visible history of changes.
Client portal
Clients see their own projects, documents and invoices without emailing to ask.
Configurator and pricing tool
Complex pricing rules encoded once, producing consistent quotes anyone can generate.
Audit-trailed records
Structured records with permissions and change history where a spreadsheet creates real risk.
06 / FAQ
Questions about Custom Software Development
Custom software or an off-the-shelf product?
Off-the-shelf, unless your process is a genuine differentiator or the per-seat cost of stitching several tools together exceeds the build. We run that comparison before quoting, and we are happy to be the ones who recommend you do not hire us for this.
What does custom software cost?
It scales with the number of distinct user roles and flows, more than with features. A single-purpose internal tool and a multi-role platform are different orders of magnitude, which is why we scope before quoting.
What happens if we stop working with you?
You keep the repository, the deployment accounts and the documentation. We deliberately use mainstream technology so another developer can pick it up, and we will brief them if you ask.
Can it use AI?
Where it earns its place — reading unstructured documents, drafting text, classifying input. We will not add a model to a feature that a rule handles more cheaply and more predictably.
Who maintains it after launch?
Your choice. We offer a maintenance arrangement quoted separately, or we hand over fully. Either way you get the defect warranty included in the build.
